Halifax Marine Research Institute

Dalhousie University, Halifax (Canada), has worked closely with the private sector marine community, regional universities and federal research labs to develop and endorse a strategy for the establishment of the Halifax Marine Research Institute (HMRI).

The Institute, a federally incorporated not for profit entity, will apply world-class science to economic, social and environmental challenges for regional and global oceans. To this end, the institute will foster collaborative, industry led research, involving university and government research partners to increase the competitiveness of the Nova Scotia marine community. The Institute will be launched on June 2, 2011.

The research themes of the new institute are:
1 – Marine Observation, Prediction and Response
2 – Marine Resource Conservation, Biodiversity and Risk assessment
3 – Marine Renewable Energy
4 – Maritime Security
5 – Marine Policy and Governance
