Ms. Sampan Panjarat is a Fisheries Biologist at the Andaman Sea Fisheries Research and Development Center (AFRDEC) in Phuket Province that‘s under Department of Fisheries (DOF), Thailand. She holds B.Sc. (1996) in Aquatic Science from Prince of Songkla University, Thailand and M.SC. from the School of Environment, Resources and Development, Faculty of Natural Resources Management, the Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand. Her present duties are in surveying, monitoring and assessing marine fisheries resources in the Andaman Sea. The fundamental information for design an appropriate fisheries management will be served to her organization in terms of abundance, status of fish stocks, population structure, migration and distribution in particular straddling or transboundary stocks such as her recent work on the Stock Assessment of the Indian Mackerel in the Andaman Sea which has been awarded an excellent research in marine research from DOF in 2011. Nevertheless, in her point of view, the linkage or balance of the fisheries resources aspect and socio-economic aspect should be taken in to consideration in fisheries management. Therefore, she carries the research relating not only such marine resources aspect but also in socio-economic aspect that emphasis the involvement of fisheries community to the fisheries management policy and regulations established by Department of Fisheries of Thailand (DOF). Among several researches, she highlights the topic of Attitudes and Perceptions of Fishers towards the 25-Year Old Seasonal Closed Measure in Phang-Nga and Krabi Bays, Thailand". Additionally, she is the administrator of Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) of the Andaman Sea and one among the effort of DOF to pioneer the VMS for Thai Vessel in order to response the Monitoring Control and Surveillance (MCS) Approach and it is another mechanism to combat the illegal unregulated and Unreported fishing (IUU fishing).
