Human Rights Approaches to Governing Fisheries: free articles (one by Dr. Charles)

Friday, February 17th, 2012

I don’t know this centre or publication, but I know Professor Anthony Charles (St. Mary’s University) and some of you have had him as a supervisor. His articles are always very good, so I post this link to the electronic journal MAST which has made this issue on Human Rights Approaches to Governing Fisheries free (MAST Volume 10, Issue 2).

Regional Alumni Representatives

Wednesday, February 8th, 2012

The UNNF Alumni Network is open to candidates for Regional Alumni Representatives.

The regional rep. is a volunteer job and its duties include:

1. acting as the focal point for his/her region and coordinating with the alumni therein

2. providing at least 4 articles for the newsletter (in addition to obtaining some other articles by the alumni from his/her region)

3. helping incoming fellows from his/her region with general aspects and coordinating their participation whenever needed

4. regularly “feeding” our communication tools (facebook page, yahoo group, website) with current information from their region, even small updates or news items

5. mobilizing interests and proposing projects for the region

6. keeping the overall alumni body through the rep updated with current information of his/her region

7. etc

Regional reps are intended to meet once a year and the meeting shall take place in a given region. Meetings venue will change every year in a rotation system so the alumni in that specific region can have their regional meeting together with the reps from all other regions. In this context we can have regional meetings and the reps from other meetings can provide useful information to be shared.

The reps are allowed to appoint a deputy to respond in their absence.

The regions initially identified – based on common ocean interests and geography – are as follows:

Region #1 South East Asia (west up to, but not including, Myanmar and east including Indonesia and Philippines)

Region #2 Pacific Islands

Region #3 South America

Region #4 Caribbean, Central America and Mexico

Region #5 West Africa and Atlantic Ocean Islands

Region #6 East Africa and Indian Ocean Islands

Region #7 Mediterranean, Black and Caspian Seas

Region #8 Arabian Peninsula

Region #9 Indian Sub-Continent and Bay of Bengal

These regions will be flexible, and activities beyond the regional meetings of the alumni will NOT BE LIMITED to any specific region: e.g. if we have a piracy programme, it would be across all regions concerned and include alumni who wish.

Potential candiates should apply via email (or yahoo group) to the General Alumni Representative until February 17th.
