There are a lot of Oceans Day initiatives out there, and that is fantastic news as it means awareness is increasing. But note that the day was recognized as a "world" day by the United Nations General Assembly, and that the UN website for Oceans Day is: http://www.un.org/Depts/los/reference_files/worldoceansday.htm

Let's keep the momentum!

I fully agree, this topic is becoming more and more important as managers and policy makers (finally) realize that "people with their feet in the water" are an integral part of managing the Ocean. The tangible and intangible aspects of cultural heritage can be very powerful avenues for fostering stewardship and beyond. Tatiana and Catalia Garcia (also from Colombia) both have very important contributions to this subject and I hope more will come.

As CITES meeting ends, the participants confirmed protective measures for oceanic whitetip, scalloped hammerhead, great hammerhead, and smooth hammerhead sharks, and porbeagle shark. This is a very successful meeting, considering that it was already a third attempt to put porbeagle shark under CITES protection!

According to news reports, Japan attempted to reopen the debate on oceanic whitetip while Granada attempted to avoid protection for hammerhead sharks. However, they narrowly failed to gain the needed majority.

Freshwater sawfish and manta rays were also addedd to CITES Apendix II during the 16th Conference of the Parties to CITES.

A long battle to protect sharks.... but perseverance paid off!
