The postdoctoral fellow will be based at Saint Mary’s University, with opportunity for periods of residency at the University of Waterloo, and will be co-supervised by Dr. Antony Charles (Saint Mary’s University) and Dr. Derek Armitage (University of Waterloo).

[Lilian Yon] This Deep-Water Coral National Natural Park is the number 57 in the National Natural Parks System and it’s located in the Caribbean Marine Zone of Colombia.

The Park was officially established on 24 May 2013. About 142000 Ha will be protected from fisheries and potential oil exploitation.

This is a moment of celebration and joy for those who discovered these deep-water coral areas and believed from the very first moment that their extraordinary diversity should be protected.

A brilliant example to be followed!

This regional meeting is an unique one, beyond the fact that it is the first alumni meeting in the Pacific, it is also the first time that a major regional organization will actively take part to one of our meetings.

Indeed, the Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat has generously offered to host this event and high-level officials such as the Oceans Commissioner will attend this meeting.

Our regional meetings are taking a considerable step towards increasing our visibility and the next meeting will be a formidable opportunity to fully display the alumni knowledge and to prove that the network is an important actor in the world of oceans.

The United Nations – The Nippon Foundation of Japan Fellowship Programme is a
fully funded research Fellowship for developing State ocean professionals. The main objective of the Fellowship is to provide advanced research and training in the field of ocean affairs and the law of the sea, and related disciplines, to government officials and other professionals from developing States.

Successful candidates will undertake their research/studies in two back-to-back phases: the first, lasting three months, with the Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea (DOALOS), UN Office of Legal Affairs; and the second, lasting six months, with a participating academic host institution. Fellowship application deadline is 15 September, and candidates should forward their applications directly to DOALOS.

The International Ocean Institute (IOI) will organise the Pacem in Maribus XXXIV (PIM34) International Forum on Sustainable Governance of the Ocean in Bangkok, Thailand from 3rd-8th September, 2013.

As part of the PIM34, IOI is working on the Youth Dialogue entitled “The Rights of Youth in the Sustainable Development of the Ocean: The Ocean We Want”. This Youth Dialogue will thoroughly discuss and analyze the problems that oceans have to face and the challenges that youth will inevitably encounter in order to build up a best future scenario for the ocean.

The project has created The Ocean We Want Facebook Page (see below) as a virtual place where young people with an interest in the Sustainability of the Ocean will be able to discuss and share their ideas, experiences and personal opinions.

The facebook page is already filled with great insights, information, and inspiration. The (still young) UN-Nippon Foundation Fellows and Alumni can contribute with our own perspectives.
