Mr. Mendis first graduated with Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of Colombo and was admitted to the Bar as an Attorney at Law in December 1996 after schooling at Sri Lanka Law College. He had extensive practice in the fields of criminal and commercial litigation for six years before joining the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sri Lanka. Subsequently he obtained the Master of Laws in International Law and Law of International Organizations from Rijks University of Groningen, The Netherlands.
At present Mr. Mendis is attached to the Legal Adviser’s Division of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and deals with Public International Law issues in his day-to-day functions which include: furnish legal advice on matters of International Law to the divisions of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and advising on the negotiation and implementation of any treaty
to which Sri Lanka is a Party. He has also Served as a Representative of the Government of Sri Lanka during various international forums, and has been closely associated in the negotiations and conclusion of several legal instruments in the international sphere which include a number of bilateral, regional and international Agreements.
