Some testimonials from the Alumni
Thanks very much for completion letter, I am so glad and proud of it.
The UN- Nippon fellowship program is an excellent program for young experts from developing countries to improve knowledge in the field of law of the sea. Through the program, apart from obtaining knowledge on law of the sea, I have learnt many other things e.g.:
- Skills to do a research;
- Skills to make presentation;
- Skills to make policy analysis;
- Skills to make a report for a meeting.
After the course, my knowledge on law of the sea in general and maritime security in particular have been improved, which definitely contribute to the development of my career, through that, I can contribute more effectively to the development of my country. I do hope that DOALOS and The Nippon Foundation will continue the program in the future so that young experts from developing countries can get benefit from it.
Last but not least, I would like to express my sincere thanks to DOALOS, The Nippon Foundation, in particular Dr. Francois Bailet – for making dream of young experts in developing countries become true. In return, alumni will need to make more efforts to maintain and build up networking in order to ensure the rules of law of the sea and to develop a world with clean ocean and safe maritime transport.
“I have the pleasure and honor to be back in New York, a year and a half later after having completed the United Nations – Nippon Foundation Fellowship Program, this time as a representative of my country, Bulgaria, to the 17th Meeting of States Parties to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and the 8th meeting of the United Nations Open-ended Informal Consultative Process on Oceans and the Law of the Sea.
As a 2005-2006 Alumni of the Program, I would like to express my strong belief in the numerous benefits of its implementation, particularly focusing on providing advanced education and training to public servants in the field of oceans affairs and the law of the sea. The Program is exceptionally useful in providing an enhanced understanding of key issues in the law of the sea, including assisting in the furthering of Fellows’ professional capacities and competencies. The Program has helped me to gain an advanced awareness of such matters, thereby enabling me to contribute to the national formulation a comprehensive ocean policy and implementing the legal regime set out in the Law of the Sea Convention and related international instruments adopted at the global level.”
“As one of 2006-2007 Alumni of the United Nations-the Nippon Foundation of Japan Fellowship Programme, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to this useful programme that provided me such a great opportunity for advanced education and training in the field of Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea. The knowledge and experiences I gained during 9 months of fellowship truly helped me to have the advanced awareness and understanding of key issues, which are concerned the effective implementation of UNCLOS and related instruments. Furthermore, those I gained have also supported me in working on marine fisheries management, both in national and regional level.”
“We have the pleasure and honour to be back in 3 years after the completion of the Fellowship, as representatives of our countries to the 18th Meeting of States Parties to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Now we are representing our countries which belong to three different regional groups: Asian, Eastern European and Latin American and Caribbean. There was a considerable amount of work to consider under the Agenda of the meeting, namely the allocation of seats of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea and the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf. (SPLOS/182 – Decision on the allocation of seats on the Commission and the Tribunal).
As the inaugural group of the United Nations – Nippon Foundation Alumni, we would like to express our strong belief in the successful continuation of the UN – Nippon Foundation of Japan Fellowship, particularly focusing on providing advance education and training in the field of oceans affairs and the law of the sea to public servants. The Programme is extremely useful and proved to be an effective means through which participants are able to gain a deeper understanding of key issues in the law of the sea, including enhanced professional capacities and competencies.”
The United Nations Nippon Foundation Fellowship program is more than a comprehensive program for capacity development in ocean issues and international law. This is a lifelong opportunity to develop professional partnerships and systematically utilise the expertise and technical assistance available within associated agencies and experts in the region and worldwide.
The United Nations Nippon Foundation (UNNF) of Japan fellowship programme provided me with a rare, invaluable and once in a lifetime opportunity that has help shape, builds and advance my knowledge on law of the sea, in particular, in relation to fisheries.The knowledge I have gained during my time as a fellow has been tremendous and has helped me enormously in my line of work. Thank you UNNF of Japan fellowship!
